Students, staff and parents were happy to put the academic year 2008-2009 behind them in July at the HJ Robinson High School in Grand Turk. It was a trying year, starting off late and with a very rough start due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike. The school experienced almost complete destruction of their buildings and along with it, many of their school materials. Aside from their challenges in the makeshift classrooms and often unbearable heat, many children also were suffering at home; carrying emotional struggles due to loss of their homes, belongings, living without electricity and even water. Along with their amazing dedication and fortitude, the students, parents and staff completed the 2008-2009 academic year with students performing even above their previous year’s test scores. This is truly admirable.
The Prime Minister of The Bahamas, The Rt. Hon Hubert A. Ingraham MP, made his most definitive statement to date concerning the suspension of the Turks and Caicos Constitution; prompted in part, by remarks made by the Turks and Caicos former Premier Dr. Michael E.Misick. The former Premier was a guest on a popular show on the JCN network in the Bahamas last Sunday in which Misick said,”I believe that The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, we’re one people, we’re all family and there’s more Turks people here than there is in the Turks and Caicos. I believe that even out of this can create an opportunity for a federation. So rescue us."
H.E. the Governor, Gordon Wetherell, announced the appointment of Helen Garlick as Special Prosecutor. Ms. Garlick will be assited by Deputy Special Prosecutor, Lee Marler.
Turks and Caicos is making history. For the first time in this form, the British government has extended what they perceive to be their rights over an Overseas Territory by suspending the TCI Constitution and replacing the elected government with an appointed council. On these compelling times, each and every day we are experiencing history being made around us. This week, following last week’s announcement of the Suspension of the TCI Constitution, the Governor announced the members of his Advisory Council, which are meant to serve as his “local” advisors during his time as leader of the country.
