The Club Med soccer field saw spectators ranging from friends and family to general managers gather to watch the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association’s exciting 2012 Resort Challenge Soccer Tournament featuring the best players from hotels and businesses across the island.

Each Sunday from Oct. 21-Nov. 11, teams from the various resorts such as Regent Palms, The Somerset, Grace Bay Club and more, along with the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) and the Turks and Caicos Islands Airport Authority (TCIAA) played in modified soccer matches. The tournament adopted a six on six play style to accommodate the smaller teams and featured adjusted regulations like shorter game clocks and a three line violation rule to keep the excitement high throughout this friendly competition.

“It’s about getting the different hotel groups together since they’re all a part of our tourism industry,” said Nicholette Thomas of the TCHTA. Through the spirit of competition the TCHTA hopes to foster stronger bonds between the people behind the businesses that drive the economy.

Another part of the goal in organizing this tournament was to improve the hotels’ relationships with the RTCIPF who just so happen to be the reigning champs from the previous tournament.

“This gives the police force and the hotels a chance to get better acquainted and get to know each other outside of emergencies and work related incidents,” commented Thomas. Their methods proved effective as the spirit of camaraderie was high on the field with the teams playing fiercely but respectfully against each other. Handshakes and congratulations were given to the victors while encouragement was given to those who didn’t fare as well on the scoreboards.

In keeping with the goal of strengthening bonds, each player was required to sign a code of conduct and expected to maintain a respectful and positive demeanor through the course of the tournament. The tournament itself was organized so that the 10 competing teams were divided into two groups for the first two weeks with the semi-finals and finals taking place in the third week. Each team was awarded points depending on their results and the two teams with the lowest point scores for each group were eliminated.

The final results saw the RTCIPF team hold on to their title as champs with the Club Med and Seven Stars teams taking second and third place respectively. All participants look forward to making the tournament an annual competition and the TCHTA has plans to make that into a reality along with expanding into other sports such as basketball and foot races.
