Beginning Sept. 10, Turks and Caicos Islands residents can apply for Permanent Residence Certificates under new rules that came into force Aug. 13.

The Ministry of Border Control and Labour had suspended processing PRC applications in February 2010 to work on clearing a backlog of thousands that had built up over many years.

After months of public consultation, immigration regulations were amended that changed the PRC requirements, which now include a sound knowledge of the English language, as well as the history, culture, geography, social studies of the TCI. Applicants who are non-native speakers of English will have to take a languarge test, and all applicants will have to take a TCI knowledge test.

The TCI Community College will administer the tests, as well as offering courses in English language and TCI Studies. The test has 50 multiple choice questions covering basic knowledge of the history and culture of the islands. A fee of $200 will be charged by the college.

The ministry recommends local newspapers, online sources, libraries, the National Trust and the National Museum on Grand Turk as good sources of information for those preparing to take the tests.

Applications for PRCs will be accepted at the ministry’s one stop shops located at Church Folly on Grand Turk and at the Sam Harvey Complex (in the former Immigration Board Office) on Providenciales.

For more information about the knowledge test, contact the Community College at 946-1163 or Provo at 941-3210.
