The public hearing set for Wednesday, July 18, on Providenciales is to unveil a proposal for a 28-story hotel on Grace Bay, the fp has learned.

The tallest structure in the Turks and Caicos Islands is the Seven Stars resort, but the tallest of three proposed buildings — one 28-story and two 22-story — would dwarf that at nearly four times the height.

“The proposed development for an EP Hotel, Conference Centre and Retail and Professional offices, exceeds current building height and requirements as set out in the TCI Development Plan,” government said July 12 announcing the public hearing. “Its approval will therefore, require changes to the legislation.”

The project is estimated to create at least 550 construction jobs, and the completed project could create nearly 500 jobs, the fp is told.

While government did not respond to the fp’s request for details, several reliable sources confirmed information about the plan and said it has been under consideration for some time, including by the interim administration and the Planning Board. Some members of both political parties reportedly also may have been briefed.

“In the interest of good governance, a public hearing is being held to allow the developer to present the proposed development to the people and to invite their comments,” the government press release said. “Please note that the governor encourages professional comments that seek to guide the process of evaluation which should determine the project’s approval, denial or modification.”

The hearing will be at 6 p.m. at the Gustarvus Lightbourne Center.

Feedback and comments are being sought until Aug. 1 in writing to the Governor’s Office, Waterloo, Grand Turk, or by e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
