Blustery day doesn’t dampen regatta fun
Wednesday, 20 June 2012 15:01

A gray day that started with light, variable winds ended with a blustery squall that capsized young sailors and blew a two big boats onto the beach at the 2012 Fools Regatta.

The weather kept the usual huge crowds down, but there was plenty of action at the 22nd annual event at the Children’s Park in the Bight on Providenciales sponsored by Islandcom.

Junior sailors took to the water on 12 new Laser Pico dinghies along with Hobie cats, Caicos sloops and multihull big boats Minx and Beluga.

Things got interesting as the big boats and sloops neared the finish line and where Picos were starting a race when it started to rain and the win quickly whipped up choppy seas. But everyone pulled together, and the storm passed in time for a happy ending to the day.

Because the regatta was abbreviated by weather, there are plenty of event T-shirts available from Takera at Sothebys in Grace Bay. Proceeds help support the Turks and Caicos Sailing Association’s children’s sailing programs.
