The Turks and Caicos Islands Tourist Board welcomed more than 20 top travel and tourism wholesalers to its 9th annual conference May 7-11 hoping to boost steadily growing tourist arrivals.

Statistics for the first quarter of 2012 showed an increase of 4.38 percent over the same period last year, when the country celebrated more than 1 million arrivals for the first time ever. January and February arrivals increased 18.3 and 10.4 percent, respectively, while March was off by 8.2 percent.

In hopes of bringing even more visitors in the future, the board invited top travel wholesalers such as Travel Impressions, Expedia, Travelocity, US Airways Vacations and West Jet Vacation which promote and sell the destination to travel agents and consumers in the United States and Canada, the top markets for TCI tourism.

The annual four-day event provides the wholesalers with a first-hand opportunity to receive an update on the destination, as well as opportunities to network with industry personnel. While here they will participate in numerous property site inspections and special tours that have been arranged throughout the islands.

“Wholesalers are a vital part of our strategy to increase the brand awareness and business to the Turks and Caicos,” said Regional Marketing Manager for the Tourist Board and event organizer Pamela Ewing. “We are delighted that our destination continues to be a high priority for them and their clients.”

One of the features of the event is the roundtable session that will enable the wholesalers to ask industry leaders direct questions about the future of tourism in the TCI, and to share the wholesaler’s efforts for promoting the destination.

“The Tourist Board is thrilled that there is still such keen interest in our destination, and we are committed to continuing our work to ensure that the Turks and Caicos remains in the forefront of the minds of vacationers and wholesalers,” said Director of Tourism Ralph Higgs.

“These are very important travel partners for the Tourist Board and the Turks and Caicos Islands as wholesalers are directly or indirectly responsible for creating or selling packages to about 90 percent of all long stay visitors to our shores.”
