For one night only, dog lovers can help the Turks and Caicos Islands rescued “potcake” dogs by simply going to the movies. On May 24 starting at 7 p.m., TCI Digicel Cinema will be opening its doors for the world premier of “Men In Black III” to island dog lovers as part of a entertaining and enjoyable way to raise money for local charity, Potcake Place K-9 Rescue. Potcake Place is a Providenciales-based dog rescue organization, but rescues dogs from all over the islands. The group was founded several years ago by local resident and dog lover, Jane Parker-Rauw. When the organization started, Parker-Rauw had no budget, facilities and just a handful of volunteers, but as the organization’s exposure grew, people from the U.S. and Canada expressed interest in adoption, and now the dog rescue sends several hundred puppies overseas for adoption every year. All money collected from the “Men In Black” premier will go directly into placing the organization’s rescued dogs into their permanent homes, which can sometimes become an expensive process for the rescue group. “Before a rescued dog is deemed adoptable, we must ensure that it receives all its vaccinations and be treated for any other needed medical conditions,” said a Potcake Place volunteer. “We also keep all our rescues in foster care for at least three weeks before shipping them off to their new families. We do not charge for adoption, so we rely 100 percent on donations from the public and adoptive homes to keep running and saving these deserving dogs.” “The money raised from this event will allow us to save more dogs and find them a place to call home.” Doors for the fundraiser open at 7 p.m. when guests can mingle over cocktails, and show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include one free wine or beer. A cash bar is available. For more information or to buy tickets, contact Cecilia Holden at 232-5100 or
