The $40 fee to get a copy of a birth certificate has been cut in half until July 1 to give a break to all the people who need copies to register as Belongers and electors over the next few months. The fee was raised last year to $40 for copies of birth certificates for people over the age of one year. However, the Ministry of Border Control and Labour reduced the fee April 27 for people between the ages of 18-69 until June 30, with persons 70 and older exempt from the fee. The $40 fee resumes July 1. Registration is currently underway for Turks and Caicos Islanders (Belongers) to obtain cards verifying their status, as no such form of documentation exists except for those granted status. With that identification in hand, islanders can then register vote. Dr. Rufus Ewing, who is seeking leadership of the Progressive National Party, says the fees should be waived completely so that cost will not prevent people from being able to register and vote vote, but the Advisory Council rejected that idea May 2. For more information regarding registration for Belonger status verification and card, contact the Ministry of Border Control and Labour at 946-2801 extension 81514 or 40711, or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
