H.J. Robinson High students about to leave “comfort zone” PDF Print E-mail

Dressed in business attire, this year’s H.J. Robinson High School 5th form students faced interviews and heard advice from successful professionals about their next step after graduation.

The exercise — under this year’s theme “Dare to leap; a world of opportunities await” — is the very last programme offered to the final year students by the school’s Guidance Counseling Department before graduation. It is geared towards helping students become worthwhile individuals who can function well and effectively in any given environment.

“This exercise is the school’s way of helping to further prepare students graduating for the world of work; a world outside their comfort zone of the high school environment,” said Guidance Counselor Vivian Otuonye. “This may include the commencement of tertiary education, gainful employment, entrepreneurship or just waiting for a ‘little’ time, while remaining jobless until something worthwhile happens.”

The students were all dressed in formal work attire for the programme and undergone formal interviews done by Human Resource Department officers selected from all around the Turks and Caicos Islands. The programme facilitators were responsible and respectable individuals from within the community, who may be deemed as role models for the youth of the TCI.

The topics for the day and the facilitators were:

  • Keynote speaker Dr. Jameika Harvey, a young leader and dentist
  • Law enforcement; crime and consequences by Inspector Jerome Caley
  • You determine your destiny; maximize your potentials by Susan Malcolm
  • Application and requirements for scholarship by Melissa Rolle and Tracey Outten
  • Reality check: college survival by Rashanda Campbell
  • TCI Community College programmes and requirements Ms. Creary
  • Healthy life styles: transmission games by Mr. Hezron
  • Money matters: managing your money by Claudia Coalbrooke
  • Entrepreneurship; small business opportunities by Jay Hamilton
  • Work ethics: employers expectations by Human Resource Department (former the Office of Public Service Management)
  • Interview skills; formal interview of all final year students by HR Officers James Astwood, Keisha Williams, Kermit Williams and Edwin Taylor.
