The young Turks and Caicos Islanders have been appointed to serve as CARICOM Youth Ambassadors for 2012-2013. “Since August 2008, the department has not been able to appoint youth ambassadors to serve as CYA’s as our status with CARICOM had been suspended,” said Youth Director Angela Musgrove. “Therefore, we were delighted to have been asked to appoint two new CYA’s as this opens the door to much needed technical and financial assistance to the youth development agenda in TCI.” Phildreka Mayham, a student at the TCI Community College, Providenciales campus, is an active member of her church and community. In addition to being a Youth Parliamentarian, she is also an active member of Rapport Group and the Interact Club, and a peer educator. “I am excited to serve and looks forward to the challenge,” Mayham said. “My experiences in working with other young people in my community has made me realize that young people can impact lives, and that is what I’ll aim to do during my tenure.” Dekkel Simmons, a final year Community College student, is a past member of Rapport and a current executive member of his church youth group. As former speaker for the Youth Parliament, Simmons brings his energy and drive to advocate for young persons to become more active and be role models in their communities. He said that he has a lot of fresh ideas for youth projects that he is eager to begin working on. The Youth Ambassador program continues to bring out the leadership skills in young persons. The support of the general public is greatly welcome and appreciated as the youth carry out their roles. Two additional youth ambassador positions are still open as the posts of Regional Youth Caucus Representatives have not yet been filled. The deadline for submission of applications has been extended until April 30. The department also has extended the deadline to comment on the revised Youth Policy and Strategic Plan documents until April 20. These documents will serve to guide the process of youth development in the TCI for the next three years (policy) and one year (plan), when they are up to be reviewed again.
