Helena Jones Robinson High School on Grand Turk was the recipient for the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources first annual Mark Crick Environmental Sustainability Award.

The award distinguishes student awareness and understanding of the vital process of moving towards an environmentally sound future and puts that comprehension into ongoing environmental action that aids the Turks and Caicos Islands in environmental sustainability.

The students at H.J. Robinson won the award for their dedication to their conservation research and scientific study of the Grand Turk salinas. Their work was highlighted in their Science Fair display with research on the increasing water levels in Hawk’s Nest Salina due to the reverse osmosis plant effluent.

The students presented a study of these areas, its fragility and criticized current unsustainable practices and provided suggestions of how to rectify the situation. The observations the group presented were backed up by several years of research and data collection.

Along with receiving the award, H.J. Robinson will be recognized in the media, presented with a plaque that will travel annually to recipient schools, and receive a cash award funded by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) that will be used towards the school’s environmental programs.

“In March 2011, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, a U.K. government body which promotes and facilitates efforts of nature conservation and sustainable development, sent Mr. Mark Crick, Senior Surveillance and Habitat Adviser of JNCC, to the TCI to assist in the Terrestrial Habitat Mapping Project of which JNCC was a partner," said DECR Education Officer Lormeka Williams.

"During Mr. Crick’s  stay in TCI, he spent time in the field with members of the DECR field team, gathering information to help develop TCI’s sustainable development capacity. He demonstrated an intrepid passion for TCI’s unique habitats, flora and fauna. Sadly, Mr. Crick passed away while in TCI, but through the Mark Crick Environmental Sustainability Award, his environmental passion will forever live on in these islands.”
