A week of events commemorating U.S. astronaut John Glenn’s splash down off Grand Turk in 1962 was a treat for children and adults alike, culminating with a fireworks display March 23 at Governor’s Beach.

On March 20, the approach road to the JAGS McCartney International Airport was renamed John Glenn Drive to remember the Turks and Caicos Islands place in the history of the United States’ first successful orbit of Earth.

“Almost the first thing visitors to Grand Turk coming by air see, as they leave the airport, is a replica of Friendship 7,” His Excellency the Gov. Ric Todd said in his opening remarks. “Almost the first thing those arriving by ship at the Grand Turk Cruise Centre will now see is the interactive exhibition commemorating the same event and the new murals we are unveiling today. This serves to underline the place of Grand Turk in a very special moment of history.”

Carnival’s Grand Turk Cruise Center unveiled newly commissioned murals depicting the past, present and future of space exploration to its “Splashdown Grand Turk” attraction. The free exhibit that opened a year ago features replicas unique to the Mercury space program, including a scaled 20-foot-tall Atlas rocket and a full-size, three-dimensional replica of astronaut John Glenn in a spacesuit, and a detailed replica of the Friendship 7 capsule.

Grand Turk school children got lessons in living in space when astronauts and educators from the NASA Space Centre visited the H.J. Robinson High, Ona Glinton Primary, Eliza Simons Primary, Newman’s Preparatory and Susanna Wesley Academy schools.

Students saw demonstrations of equipment, utensils, special clothing and other material used in space.
