Beaches Resort was a buzz of activity when it hosted the finals of the 2012 British Atlantic Financial Services National Primary Schools’ Spelling Bee on Feb. 17. Ten finalists battled it out for nearly four hours, until Brianna Brown from the Enid Capron Primary School in Five Cays on Providenciales was crowned Spelling Bee champion. Fifteen brave students participated in the two-day long competition beginning Feb. 16 at the Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex. After three hours of intense and impressive competition, 10 finalists remained to battle it out on day two. In the final round, four students spelled their hearts out for the chance to call themselves and their school this year’s winner. Students from Enid Capron Primary School, Richmond Hills Primary School, BEST Institute and Precious Treasures all made it to the final round. In a repeat of last year’s tough competition, it came down to Enid Capron taking the win and Richmond Hills coming in a close second. BEST Institute and Precious Treasures tied for third place. The contest is put on each year by the Education Board thanks to sponsorship from British Atlantic Financial Services, whose representative Wilbur Caley presented winners and finalists with trophies and prizes.
