Police and emergency vehicles will be able to respond quicker to 911 calls, thanks to a generous donation from FortisTCI.

For the sixth year in a row, the company decided to forgo sending out Christmas cards and use the money to help a local charitable organization.

This year 911 Emergency Communications was the recipient of Fortis’ goodwill. On Jan. 25, representatives from Fortis presented 911 Director Tammika Lall with a check in the amount of $2,000. “Thank you, Fortis, from the bottom of our hearts,” a very grateful Lall said upon receiving the donation.

Lall explained the funds would be used to help in the programme’s nationwide street naming project. She said while streets do have names, funds have been lacking to erect street signs across the islands.

Erecting signs is vital to helping emergency personal, including police and ambulance services, in locating residences and businesses quickly. It also helps residents to give accurate directions when calling in an emergency to 911, Lall said.

Also on hand were representatives from the Royal Turks and Caicos Police Force. Police Commissioner Colin Farquhar said Fortis has worked together in the past with police, and that he is grateful for their ongoing commitment to helping the community.
