The Undergraduate Programmes Department of The University of the West Indies Open Campus is looking for people holding postgraduate degrees to teach or write bachelor’s of science courses in Youth Development Work. This is a new programme developed for delivery by the Open Campus starting in September 2012 that will be conducted over three years of full-time study and comprises a total of 90 credits (1,170 hours). It was developed in collaboration with the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Centre, in support of efforts towards the professionalisation of youth work in the Caribbean. It is intended to fill a need in Commonwealth Caribbean countries for standardised professional training for youth workers in government public service, non-governmental organisations and community groups. The courses have been developed to support student acquisition of a set of regionally agreed “Level IV” competencies for youth work. The programme of study involves online lectures, tutorials, problem-based learning through seminars, student-led group discussions, debates, case studies and guest presentations as well as practical assignments and field placements which are assessed continuously throughout the programme through individual essays, reports and research projects, participation in group exercises and supervised field work. Students will gradually build skills in a wide range of areas with special emphasis on critical thinking, partnership-building, research, advocacy, policy formulation, programme planning and design, programme and project implementation, youth health and well-being and youth empowerment. The degree will target professional youth workers, including graduates of diplomas or associate’s degrees in Youth Development Work as well as students with no experience of youth development work. Persons interested in writing and/or teaching courses are being invited to e-mail their indication of interest and curriculum vitae to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
