![]() Police are in the process of “completely revising and enhancing” laws controlling the ownership of firearms and other weapons in the Turks and Caicos Islands. “The process will be also designed to regulate certain types of firearms and weapons, to help develop an appropriate legislation that prevents the misuse of firearms and to enhance public safety,” police said in a statement. Police Assistant Superintendent Darron Williams has been named Chief Firearms Officer. He will have complete control of all matters relating to firearms and ammunition and report directly to police Commissioner Colin Farquhar. Williams also handle other matters, such as police interaction with security companies. “In consultation with relevant stakeholders and interested parties and with an effort to promote public safety, a process is being developed which involves the effective risk management of firearms and their owners,” police said. One year ago, about 200 civilians legally owned guns in the TCI. Currently, gun license permits must be renewed annually, and licenses from other countries are not accepted. Current requirements are to be 18 years old, have a clean criminal record, have a medical report on their physical and mental fitness, have two testimonials from two justices of the peace, pass a firearms safety and handling test and receive a recommendation from the police divisional command team, which investigates each the applicant. Man, 27, in custody on firearms, theft charges A 27-year-old Providenciales man will be in custody until January to face firearms and theft charges in the Supreme Court on Grand Turk. Michel Joicius is charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition and theft. The charges stemmed from an Nov. 4 incident in the Lower Bight on Providenciales.
