Seven Stars developer and long time Providenciales resident Jak Civre has been charged with bribery, the Special Investigation Prosecution Team confirmed today (Nov. 10)

Civre appeared in Providenciales Magistrates Court and was released on conditional bail. He is scheduled to appear at the Supreme Court on Feb. 3.

The SIPT did not release any details of the charge against Civre, but the 2009 Commission of Inquiry report by Sir Robin Auld said that Civre gave $150,000 to former Turks and Caicos Islands Deputy Premier Floyd Hall’s company, Paradigm, on Feb. 8, 2007, one day before elections.

“Civre has confirmed in writing to the Commission that this was a political contribution and that he had paid it into the account of Paradigm on the instruction of the Hon. Floyd Hall,” Auld said in his report. “He also stated that he had made such payments to political parties and individuals in the past. He insisted, however, that he did not seek or receive any favours in return for the payment.”

Auld described the payment as “possibly corrupt” and recommended a criminal investigation.

Hall has not been named as being charged with any offenses, but the SIPT has confirmed that a 47-year-old man was charged Nov. 2. The man’s identity and the allegations against him have not been revealed, but the SIPT said the man would appear in court “in due course.”

A third person reportedly has been charged, but the SIPT has not confirmed or denied that report.

Auld’s report led the U.K. to suspend elected government in August 2009 and appoint veteran British prosecutor Helen Garlick and the SIPT to investigate Auld’s allegations of widespread corruption by former government officials and others.
