A local man who was illegally fishing near Thompson Cove off Providenciales will have to pay a $1,000 fine or spend six months in jail.

Department of Environment and Coastal Resources officers were on patrol Sept. 1 in the vicinity of Thompson Cove when they boarded and searched a gray fishing vessel. The vessel was towed to shore and searched, and officers found egg bearing lobsters and other marine products.

A search of the DECR database further revealed that the vessel was unlicensed and the person on board, Harold Morvin Rigby, was unlicensed.

Rigby was charged with use of unlicensed vessel in commercial fishing, taking marine products without a commercial fishing license and possession of egg bearing lobster.
