Wind and rain made the going tough for 11 Turks and Caicos Islands golfers who played Aug. 1-6 in the RBC Royal Bank sponsored 55th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships. Trinidad and Tobago won the overall team championship and three of five other divisions, with Puerto Rico taking the other two. “We all tried our best,” said team member John Donatien. “It was hard work for us.” Donatien said he expected some golfers for both Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago to be turning professional, judging by their under par scores in terrible weather conditions on the par 71 championship course at Millennium Lakes Golf Club in Trinidad and Tobago. Of 75 birdies shot during the tournament, Trinidad and Tobago shot 23, and Puerto Rico shot 14. Title sponsor RBC Royal Bank donated TT $1,000 for each birdie to the RBC Caribbean Children’s Cancer Fund. “RBC is committed to supporting Caribbean player development from the ground level, paving the way for high-performance amateurs to become Caribbean stars at the professional level, while making a positive impact on our communities,” said RBC’s Caribbean Banking Chief Executive Officer Suresh Sookoo. The RBC/RBTT Cancer Fund was established in 2009. Since then RBC has contributed over TT$3.5 million towards the cancer fund and raised additional sums through various fund raisers. Travelling to play in the tournament with Donatien were fellow TCI golfers Rodney Lavard, Mike Adamo, Fraser Dods, Terry Erskine, Will Shoreman, Chris Bruno, Bill Confer, Jumphol (JP) Srinark, Graham Malyan and Richard Sanmiya. Other countries battling for the regional title were the Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, Jamaica, Barbados and Cayman Islands. Overall Team Championship (Arthur Zaide Trophy) Men’s Open Competition (Hoerman Cup) — Puerto Rico Men Over 50 Years (Francis and Steele-Perkins Trophy) — Trinidad and Tobago Men Over 60 Years (Higgs & Higgs Trophy) — Puerto Rico Men Over 35 Years (Ramon Baez Trophy) — Trinidad and Tobago Ladies’ Open Competition (George Teale Trophy) — Trinidad and Tobago
