Provo hit with 3 island-wide power outages PDF Print E-mail

Providenciales residents went without power three different times July 25 for a total of about four hours because of equipment problems for Fortis TCI Ltd.

“The first outage occurred at 12:13 p.m. when a vehicular accident caused the live high voltage lines to come into contact with each other, generating a fault,” Ernie Jackson, vice president of Generation and Engineering for Fortis, said in a press statement.

“The circuit breaker which should have isolated the problem malfunctioned and did not operate. The equipment at the plant then went into ‘protective mode’ to ensure the safety of the equipment and personnel which caused the entire island-wide outage. This first outage lasted for approximately one hour,” Jackson said.

“One hour later at 2:07 p.m. one of the largest engines lost the ability to maintain frequency and shut itself down causing a second island-wide outage. The engine and software were examined by representatives of the engine’s manufacturer, and it was determined that the engine was suitable to return to service. Power was restored to all customers by 3:52 p.m.

“At approximately 8:00 p.m. a third island-wide outage occurred on the same engine. The engine was removed from service, and other units were put into service. Fortis TCI’s engineers are working closely with the engine’s manufacturer to rectify all issues, and we apologise for the inconvenience caused,” Jackson said.
