A Consultative Forum committee is collecting ideas to give to the interim government on how to help bolster businesses, but says all government can do is try to create a good business environment.

“Business must always look out for itself,” the forum’s Business Development Committee Chairman John Phillips told the Providenciales Chamber of Commerce at its meeting July 18. “Government cannot take care of business.”

Phillips and fellow committee member Karen Delancy opened the floor for a two-hour, free-wheeling discussion that ran the gamut of both small and large business concerns.

Much of the frustration was directed at inefficiency in government agencies that businesses must deal with before they are created and afterward in day to day operations. New increases in government fees and taxes also drew loud complaints.

Business leaders said they get held up by immigration officials and work permit problems, and that finding qualified Turks and Caicos Islanders to hire is a big problem because of a lack of education and training for available jobs.

Phillips noted that TCInvest is now being made a one-stop-shop for new and existing businesses to make necessary transactions more friendly and easy to access. Until now TCInvest has been a “huge disappointment,” he said, having veered away from its initial purpose of fostering inward investment.

Phillips said chamber members’ concerns were the same as others the committee has met with so far. He assured them that the committee and the forum would make sure that realistic measures would be put forth that the government could act on to help the business climate.
