The People’s Democratic Movement says it objects to the selection of a new National Insurance Board director because the person — who hasn’t been announced — is not a Turks and Caicos Islander.

“The issue of whether or not the NIB director is also a Turks and Caicos Islander is not up for debate,” the PDM’s July 6 statement says. “Any new director who does not fit this mandatory prerequisite will not be well received by the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

His Excellency the Gov. Gordon Wetherell told the fp that the NIB ordinance doesn’t require the director to be a Turks and Caicos Islander (Belonger).

A selection panel chose the most qualified person from among 31 candidates, of which only two were from the Turks and Caicos Islands, the governor said.

The panel that made the decision consisted of the NIB’s deputy chairman, actuary and human resources consultant, and representative from the governor’s office, the governor said.

Whoever is director of the NIB also holds a seat on the National Health Insurance Board. That board recently selected a new CEO for the National Health Insurance Plan who is not a Turks and Caicos Islander but is married to one. No objections have been expressed to that selection.
