Acting on advice from fishermen and the Fisheries Advisory Committee, the governor’s Advisory Council has decided to postpone the beginning of lobster season by one month past the usual opening date of Aug. 1 to Sept. 1. His Excellency the Gov. Gordon Wetherell said July 6 that the action was taken because of “significant problems with the conch and lobster fisheries in particular but also potentially with the fin fish as well.” The council also will commission a bioeconomic study of the lobster fishery to ensure long-term sustainability of the industry and livelihood of fishermen. The sustainability of the conch fishery is also a concern, and the council wants the next recommended catch limit not be increased until the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources makes recommendations on how to improve collection of data and monitoring in conch fishing industry, the governor said. As for fin fishing, the council made a strong recommendation for a ban on the catching of parrotfish. These colorful fish are an important part of the ecological balance of the reef system. They feed on the reef, eating algae that can overgrow the reefs, and their excretions create sand.
