Former Premier Michael Misick issued a statement June 14 again urging the Turks and Caicos Islands to seek independence, repeating a call he has made since he and his government were removed from office in August 2009. “My people of the Turks and Caicos Islands, let’s stop pussy-footing around while the rest of the world is passing us by,” the four-page statement said. “Our future does not lie with Britain. Let us stop wasting time and warming up harmony. “Let’s seek our independence NOW!!” Misick, several of his former ministers and others are under investigation after a Commission of Inquiry in 2009 alleged corruption in the government of Misick’s Progressive National Party. When the Constitution and elected government were suspended and the governor took over in August 2009, the interim government says the country was on the brink of bankruptcy with a bloated public service and unable to pay its bills. Misick’s latest statement echoes repeated claims by PNP party leaders that their government created prosperity and that the U.K.-run interim government has ruined the economy. The PNP says the interim government should have chosen to spend its way out of the worldwide economic downturn like the U.S. instead of reducing spending and cutting back as the U.K. has done.
