Despite the rainy weather, golf enthusiasts came together earlier this month to raise money for two very commendable island charities. The famed 12th Annual Jadot Cup raised money and awareness for the Turks and Caicos AIDS Awareness Foundation (TCAAF) and put funds towards the TCAAF’s flagship project, the Edward C Gartland Youth Centre in downtown Providenciales, which opened it doors in November 2008. “There was, as usual, a fantastic turn-out of 78 players participated, and the day was another great success,” said Jadot Cup Chairman and TCAAF Director Terry Drummey. “We would like to congratulate this year’s winning team — well done Blair Mason, Dale Hodgkins, Andrea Todd and Dean Nollan!” The Jadot Cup began 12 years ago as a fundraising tournament for hospitality staff workers, and the tournament grew to be a huge success, eventually raising funds to launch the TCAAF in 2003. Since its inception, the foundation has taken on a life of its own, with its mission to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS through education and events like the Jadot Cup and raising between $25,000 and $40,000 each June. The TCAAF strives to dispel myths and negative notions the community might have of the virus though increased education and awareness. “The money raised will be used to fund the various programs that run at the centre, supplies for activities and other operating costs, and with the continued support from the community we can really make a difference to the lives of the youth in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” said Edward C Gartland Youth Centre’s Director Roxann Wake-Forbes. “Through the various programs, including tutoring, basketball, tennis, art and craft, computers and dance to name a few, we seek to improve self-esteem, social interaction and life skills among the youth here on the Island,” she said. “Our aim at the centre is to empower the youth of this country in making smart and healthy choices, providing them with opportunities they may have otherwise not experienced and equipping them with the tools to become productive members of our community.” The TCAAF relies on membership fees and fundraising efforts. Individual memberships are $100, and corporate memberships are $500. Call 331-9602 for details.
