 Our beautiful islands were saved from hundreds of plastic bags Saturday, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers and the cooperation of the community. In honour of World Environment Day, the Turks and Caicos Islands Environmental Club organised a “Day Without Plastic” campaign, part of their ongoing effort to ban the disposable bags that continue to threaten our environment. One disposable plastic bag can take up to 1,000 years to degrade in the environment, a staggering number considering the little effort it takes to keep them out of our garbage bins. Using reusable bags not only saves the environment around us, but also protects marine life which is endangered by the bags that make their way into our surrounding waters. The Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation estimates that a million birds and more than 100,000 turtles and marine mammals are killed each year by ingesting single use plastics. Around 20 volunteers handed out around 800 reusable bags that were donated by caring organisations across the TCI. WIV, PPC Ltd., Grace Bay Realty, Grace Bay Resorts, the Veranda, British West Indies Collegiate and KB Homes all donated reusable bags for the cause. On June 4, shoppers at nine major island retailers on Providenciales were met with smiling faces eager to provide them with a free reusable bag and some facts about the devastation plastic bags are causing to the world around us. Big Blue Unlimited also sponsored “Shop with Thought” signs that were hung in all the participating retailers as a constant reminder to all of us to avoid plastic bags. Participating locations included Graceway Gourmet, Graceway IGA, Island Pride, Quality Supermarket downtown, Quality Supermarket on Leeward Highway, Price Club, Building Materials, Business Solutions and KB Homes.

TCI Protected Areas Series
The fp is publishing a series of articles on the Turks and Caicos Islands Protected Area System to increase public awareness and respect for the beauty and value of this "beautiful by nature" country.
