![]() The U.K.’s claim that there are only 7,000 Turks and Caicos Islanders “politically represented” in a population of 30,000 is wrong and should not be considered in discussions about changing the voting method and the Constitution, the People’s Democratic Movement said in a June 7 statement. “This information or misinformation is deceivingly incorrect,” the PDM claims. “We would accept that it is merely an oversight, however because of the consistent repeating of this incorrect information, we are compelled to demand that the (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) discontinue to use this statistic as a basis for decision-making purposes.” U.K. ministers and constitutional advisors have said repeatedly that there are only 7,000 Belongers entitled to vote, which prompted proposals to change the voting method to prevent potential problems and disproportionate representation. “We have reason to believe that there are approximately 35,000 persons living in the Turks and Caicos Islands which would represent a doubling of the population in approximately 10 years since the last census was conducted,” the PDM said. The party claims those 35,000 break down as follows:
A census has not been conducted in the TCI since 2001. In May 2010 the government approved a census to be conducted this year. Censuses are usually conducted every 10 years. Preliminary work has been done toward a nationwide headcount, including dividing islands into enumeration districts, mapping those districts for data analysis, designing the census questionnaire and updating census manuals, according to the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics. Permanent Secretary for Finance Delton Jones told the fp recently that the census was still on track to take place this year. Click here to read the PDM's full statement.
