Distinguished Grand Turk educator Ona Glinton passed away at the Cockburn Town Medical Centre on Tuesday, May 10. She was 100.

Hospital officials said the beloved Grand Turk resident had been admitted to the hospital after becoming ill on Friday, May 6.

Glinton turned 100 in June and was honored in August during a well-attended party at Government House, where she received a card from the Queen.

Glinton had a distinguished career in the Public Service as an educator, and the Ona Glinton Primary School is named in her honor. Additionally, she dedicated many years to Guiding in the TCI, as well as in her church.

A stalwart in education, she spent a great part of her life in the teaching world, both in junior and kindergarten teaching in the primary schools of Grand Turk. She devoted 20 years in that profession.

A graduate of the Grand Turk Secondary School, she retired from teaching at government schools in 1972 and pursued kindergarten teaching at home.

As Captain and later Commissioner in Guiding, she trained a number of girls for service in the community and also in the home. She was a faithful member of the Wesleyn Methodist Church and in her youth had served as a Sunday school teacher, singer in the choir, member of the Girl’s League and assisted generally in all the activities of the church.

She was also one of the founding members of the Eunice Household #6314 and served faithfully in all the offices of the order throughout the years.

She was married to the late Wilfred Glinton of Salt Cay in 1946. She became the proud mother of Mrs. Hyacinth Saunders, who is now living in Philadelphia, and Mr. Frederick Glinton of Tulsa, Oklahoma; also of her adopted son and daughter, Mr. Earl Glinton of California and Mrs. Estelle Pinder of Abaco.

In the community, Glinton was renowned as an educator, friend and good neighbor to everyone. As as ardent traveller, she visited many countries and delighted in recounting tales about them, especially animals seen at the zoos.

Glinton offered the following advice to all upon her 100th birthday:

“Do all the good you can, to all the people you can, when and wherever you can.”
