Sign up for Graceway tennis tournament

The Graceway Sports Center is serving up some family fun, hosting its second tennis tournament for 2011.

Kicking off Friday, May 20, through May 22, the Graceway Sports Center will host both juniors and adults match play in singles and doubles.
Adults and juniors will play simple elimination (if you lose the first match in singles and doubles, you are out), and every match is to eight games. In the finals, the best of three sets will win the prize with a super tie break if necessary.

The tournament is open to anyone interested in having fun on the tennis court. Entry fee is $45 for adults and $25 for kids.

There will also be exhibition matches between local island pros.

Thanks to new sponsors Amanyara Villas, Yoshi Sushi Bar, Java Island and AIB, resident tennis coach Rey Garcia is now offering free tennis lessons for juniors every Saturday. Support from these local sponsors is allowing Garcia to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to try the sport of tennis.

“I want to encourage more young people to play tennis is the TCI,” Garcia explained. “It is a great sport, with so many benefits.”

Garcia is offering free mini-tennis lessons to juniors interested in learning to play tennis from 4-6 p.m. every Saturday. He is also fostering a junior competitive group for juniors who show both the potential and commitment to further their skills in the game.

“I see so many young players with talent, and I want to help develop them through this program,” he said.

The tournament is part of the Graceway Sports Centers ongoing series of tournaments aimed at growing the sport of tennis in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

“Each tournament we have had so far has gotten bigger and that is very encouraging,” Garcia added. Starting with fewer than two dozen players last year, the February tournament this year saw more than 60 players joining in the fun.

“Tennis can be a very social sport, and we want to see that happen here,” he said. Spectators are encouraged to come out to watch and support tennis in the TCI.
