Drivers licenses and motor vehicle licensing fees are the latest government fees to see new hikes, most increasing by 50 percent. Starting May 1, a drivers license will now cost residents $150, a 50-percent increase over the previous $100 fee. For those applying for a Class A or B, constructional and loading equipment or trucks of two tons or more, the fee is now a hefty $375, a major increase over the previous $250 fee. Licensing a car went up 50 percent from $100 to $150. Licensing for trucks and jeeps will jump from $125 to $150. Commercial vehicle licensing will also see a major increase from $200 to $375 in most cases, including taxi cabs, which go from $250 to $375. The updated fees were published in an Extra-Ordinary Gazette on April 6, which was required to make legislative changes to the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations and the Road Traffic Regulations. The department also says the required changes have been made to the appropriate computer systems. A review has been underway of all government fees as part of the ongoing revenue study looking for ways to close the budget deficit. According to the study, many government fees have not been keeping up with inflation. In some cases, fees have not been raised in more than 15 years, though there has been 36 percent inflation. The Business Licensing Regulations were amended this month to adjust fees for all business licensing categories by 35-percent across the board, taking the minimum license fee from $150 to $300. The deadline for submitting license renewals is April 28, and Business Licenses that are not renewed as of April 29 will be subject to a penalty of 10 percent per month of the appropriate business license fee for each month the fee remains outstanding. The Department of Road Safety and Transportation said all arrears associated with these licences must be paid prior to renewing any licence. The department also says it will be stepping up its measures to ensure everyone is carrying the correct licenses. “The Department of Road Safety and Transportation will be closely monitoring driving licence and vehicle registration renewals and instances where persons are driving without a valid licence will be detected and remedial action undertaken in these situations,” the department said in an April 26 statement.
