Health care officials from the public and private sectors met recently to work on a five-year strategic health care plan for the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Ministry of Health and Human Services in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) hosted the workshop March 29-April 1 at the Veranda Resort. PAHO consultant Peter Carr, who developed the ministry’s 2005-2010 plan, led workshop participants in a review of the gains and challenges in the health system over the past five years. The new health plan will focus on recent health care reform initiatives such as the operation of primary, secondary and tertiary care services within the new hospitals, the role of the National Health Insurance Plan, coordination of primary health care services and the roles and function of the Ministry of Health. Other areas to be addressed by the new health plan included an integrated health information system; community-based primary health care; institutional health; occupational health; mental health and substance dependence; environmental and social determinants of health; and the surveillance, prevention and control of communicable and non- communicable diseases such as HIV-AIDS, tuberculosis, hypertension, obesity and cancer. Carr said the focus of the planning session was on the vision, mission, broad goals and objectives of the Ministry of Health and Human Services.
