Air travel in and out of the Turks and Caicos Islands has been in chaos lately, due to a number of unfortunate circumstances.

The Providenciales International Airport was shut down Thursday, March 24, as a result of a number of civil service employees calling in sick, crippling the ability of the Airport Authority to run the facility.

“The Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority has suspended operations into and out of its aerodromes due to the absence of adequate coverage from the Royal Turks and Caicos Fire Service,” the government agency said.

Travellers trying to get into and out of the territory were left stranded, many bearing significant costs for the disruption.

Flight operations returned to normal Friday, but confusion and uncertainty continued for many who were unsure if and when normal flight operations might continue.

“All the stress that was unwound during the weeks holiday was wiped out with the anticipation and stress of today’s flight,” said one traveller who was leaving the island on Friday morning’s American Airlines flight to Miami.

The problem was compounded with flights in and out of Miami over the following days being canceled due to a fuel shortage at the airport.

A massive fire at the Miami airport Wednesday night has caused airlines to cancel hundreds of flights over the last couple of days to avoid major delays.

Tanker trucks have provided the only way to fuel planes since the fire. Airport officials reported the fire may have been triggered by a mechanical issue.

The first plane into the TCI out of Miami since Friday arrived nearly two hours late on Sunday evening, due to a fuel delay.

The airline offered passengers the option to change their flight arrangements at no cost during the period.
