![]() It was a packed house as the TCI Flamingos played their first match on the newly inaugurated Meridian Field in Grace Bay. The country’s official rugby team took the travelling Bayonne Bombers from New Jersey down in style with a huge 46-12 win. It was a shutout in the first half, with the Flamingos putting 34 points on the scoreboard to a scoreless Bayonne team. In the second half, Bayonne was able to score, but it was not enough to overcome the momentum of the Flamingos and Man of the Match Dorel Williams, who scored two tries. The Scotiabank Challenge Match was viewed by an impressive crowd of supporters who came out Saturday, March 14, to cheer on their home team. The crowed was also wowed by the talents of the junior players during the Junior Rugby Match that led up to the opener. The first Scotiabank Challenge Trophy was awarded to Flamingo’s team captain Blair Mason by Scotiabank Commercial Banking Manager Jim Alston. “This is a great beginning for TCI Rugby,” an enthusiastic and proud TCI Rugby Football Union President Keith Burant told the excited crowd. The moment had been a long time coming for Burant, who has been supporting the founding of an official rugby union in the TCI for more than a decade. Along with support from many others, Burant spearheaded the creation of the union and the building of their own field in Grace Bay. “Numerous businesses contributed in many ways, either through the donation of labour, equipment, materials and money,” Burant said. “I would like to thank Cove Construction, Herzog, PPC, Carlisle Supply, Provo Golf Club, Environmental Arts, Air Cool and numerous others that helped make a dream reality. “The fact that we are playing a match on this field today is testimony to the hard work of the TCIRFU members, many of whom have labored for free and with limited recognition over the past five years,” he said. The official TCI Rugby Football Union was formed in 2001, and today is recognized by the West Indies Rugby Union. The TCIRFU has participated in several regional and international competitions.
