After months of uncertainty, the 2011 CARIFTA games are now on schedule to be held in Jamaica. During a ceremony in Kingston this week, regional representatives from LIME signed a two-year contract totalling $400,000 to sponsor the CARIFTA games. “This is more than a sponsorship, it’s an investment,” said LIME’s Grace Silvera, regional vice president of Marketing and Corporate Communications. “Jamaica welcomes the opportunity to stage the prestigious championships as we continue to position the island as a premier location for major sporting events,” said Olivia Grange, minister of Youth Sports and Culture. Grange lauded LIME for its commitment, noting that the contribution will help the games be held in Jamaica for the first time in more than a decade. The games are scheduled to be held in Montego Bay from April 22-24 and will attract more than 800 athletes, their families, coaches and supporters. During the three-day event, more than 150 events will be staged including sprints, distance races, relays and field events.
