An amazing opportunity has arisen for Turks and Caicos Islands student Temard Butterfield, who is studying overseas on a government scholarship. The University of Technology in Jamaica has nominated Butterfield to sit in as university president for one week, the first time this privilege has been granted in the university’s history. Butterfield will be responsible for running the university with the assistance of the deputy president. The honour was well deserved, according to the Ministry of Education, which noted that Butterfield has not only maintained the grade-point average requested by the ministry, but has been actively involved in co-curricular activities during his studies. Butterfield also currently holds two prestigious positions — Student Union president representing local and international students, and deputy chairman of the Jamaica Union, a board which consists of all presidents of the various colleges/universities and represents all 25 tertiary institutions in Jamaica at a national level. Butterfield was also recommended to sit on the Jamaica Student Loan Bureau Board as a member and later became a member of the University of Technology Council. “Through this experience I must say that I have developed in ways that I never expected,” Butterfield said. “The opportunities that I was presented with as an international student were amazing. “I would like to thank the Ministry of Education for affording me the opportunity to study at the University of Technology, where I will continue to grow and develop in so many areas and utilize these experiences to help me to be a better citizen for and of the TCI when I return.”
