Future Turks and Caicos Islands scientists will have the chance to present their talents thanks to PPC Ltd., which is partnering with the Ministry of Education to present this year’s Science Fair.

The Ministry of Education Science Fair 2011 sponsored by PPC takes place March 9-10 on Providenciales. This year’s theme is “Caring for the TCI Environment is Our Responsibility: SUSTAIN, PRESERVE, ENHANCE.”

The 2011 Science Fair will kick off with an opening ceremony at the Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex at 10 a.m., followed by two days of unique displays of science exhibits from public and private secondary schools within the TCI. All schools will have a chance to present brilliant and exciting ways in which they can participate in caring for the TCI environment.

Students aren’t the only ones who will have a chance at exhibiting. PPC will be using the Science Fair to educate and amaze the crowd with their interactive, eye catching science demonstration.

Other planned activities for the fair include a science quiz competition for high school students on March 10 at 10 a.m. and a science poster competition, culminating with an award ceremony.

“PPC has always been a huge supporter of initiatives which encourage the development of young TCI minds,” said Allan Robinson, vice president of Customer and Corporate Services. “This partnership with the Ministry of Education also complements our environmental programme which aims to encourage the public to be more concerned about TCI’s environment.”

“We hope that the Science Fair becomes an annual event, and we want to encourage others to make themselves available to be a part of efforts being put forth by the Ministry of Education.”

Director of Education Edgar Howell said the fair is a “centre of learning” that presents an opportunity for students to showcase their innovative and creative skills.

“The fair is certainly one way to heighten an interest in science and create a public awareness of the importance of the scientific method as a viable approach to solving some of our more perplexing environmental and social problems,” Howell said.

“The Ministry and Department of Education are pleased that PPC Ltd. has agreed to partner with us to make this Science Fair 2011 a reality,” Howell said.
