People’s Democratic Movement Leader Doug Parnell and several members of his party had “useful and encouraging” talks last week in London with several U.K. ministers.

Parnell met with both the Liberal Democrat peer Lord Nigel Jones and Minister for the Overseas Territories Henry Bellingham during the TCI politician’s week-long visit to Britain.

Lord Jones is vice-chairman of the U.K. government’s All Party Committee on the Turks and Caicos Islands and has long been an expert on Overseas Territories. He is also an outspoken critic of the TCI being currently under British rule.

“It was a real pleasure to catch up with Doug Parnell,” Lord Jones said. “He is both an interesting and passionate person with a deep love and concern for his country. It was useful to meet him and his colleagues to receive an update on current conditions in the TCI and concerns of the islanders.”

Lord Jones says the men discussed a number of topics and he “learned a lot.” He said the information will enable him to press the U.K. government further to help speed up the stalled process towards democratic elections.

“Much depends on the work of the Special Prosecutor’s team to end the uncertainty,” Jones said. “I know they are working hard, but it does seem to be taking rather a long time to come to any conclusions.”

Jones said the talks made him more aware of the financial pressures on the TCI budget regarding reduced revenues and fixed costs. Parnell told the fp it was important to him to share the concerns and burdens of the TCI people with the U.K. minister.

Parnell also met with Emma Reynolds, shadow junior Foreign Office Minister. Parnell said during those talks the PDM leaders expressed “our concerns for our people.” This included stressing the importance of the U.K. intended financial package for the TCI and updating her on the constitutional process.

The visit was part of Parnell’s ongoing agenda as party leader to ensure the wishes and needs of the people are heard by the powers in Britain. He said he was pleased with the results of his meetings. “We opened up the door for dialogue and are ensuring we have firm relations with all sides in the U.K.”
