Brought to you by the National Trust

February 2 is World Wetlands Day, marking the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands 40 years ago in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations and groups of citizens from around the globe take advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions to raise public awareness of wetlands’ value and benefits. This year’s theme is Wetlands and Forests, especially chosen because 2011 is the U.N. International Year of Forests.

Thanks to these local students who are helping to raise awareness in the Turks and Caicos Islands of the value of our precious wetlands and forests.

Caring for Wetlands - An anwser to climate change
By Akia Guerrier/Enid Capron Primary

Our climate is changing
So what do we do?
Protect our environment
And our wetlands too

Our wetlands protect us
They keep us intact
Don’t ever try to spoil that
This might cause an attack

Don’t destroy our marine life
Please leave their habitat
Nurture and preserve them
God’s gift, don’t let him regret

We are beautiful by nature
Our wetlands are apart of that
If you care — and I care
And everyone is aware
Then the wetlands will remain there

Wetlands
By Esteven Lubin/New Age Academy

Lying in the tropics and subtropics too
A treasure created for me and for you.
Marshes, bogs and swaps are a few
Of the beautiful wetlands created for me and for you.

A home for mangroves and fishes we eat
Boat-riders dancing to the Caribbean beat.
Protection of shoreline, historical facts
Gathered sometimes are huge artifacts.

North Caicos, Middle Caicos, East Caicos too
Are International Ramsar Sites reserved for me and for you.

So let us hold dear!
And handle with care
God’s treasured wetlands
Created for me and for you!

Celebrate with me
By Jackson Pierre, New Age Academy

Celebrate with me the beauty of Nature
God-given to nurture and mature
A cycle grand in stature
Housed in every corner
Treasures waiting to be discovered.

See what I see?
A conch pearl here! An iguana there!
Flora and Fauna side by side
Whisper, “Please care for me
Don’t let waste choke me
Cause strong roots to fall
Weak under me!”

My waters support life not death
Grand Turk to Salt Cay
Provo, Pine and Grand Cay
Each treasures a key
Mangroves aplenty
Red, white and black lining the sea
Sanctuary
Celebrate with me the beauty in Nature.

The Wetlands
By Renard Brown, Richmond Hill Preparatory

The wetlands, the wetlands crying out in dismay,
How many of them are still here today?
For man’s use we have torn them down,
We use their space to make cities and towns.
Endangering species by the minute,
Who knew that so many animals lived in it?
So help save the wetlands, help us while you can,
It can lead to a clean world made by our hands.
