Just one week after the initial announcement to revitalize the dormant Civil Service Association, Dr. Rufus Ewing was elected president of the association. The CSA was originally founded in 1973 but has been dormant since 2003. A working group of civil servants hoping to regenerate the CSA organized new elections last week for an executive board in order to bring new life to the association. The elections were held Jan. 6, when members voted on each of five executive board positions and five island branch representatives. More than 200 of the more than 2,000-member civil service participated in the elections, but Ewing says the movement continues to gain momentum. “The initiative to revitalize the Civil Service Association was a great success,” says Ewing, who currently holds the position as Director of Medical Services in the Turks and Caicos Islands. As president Ewing will be assisted by Vice President Jamal Robinson, Treasurer Stuart Taylor, Secretary General Samantha Glinton and Public Relations Officer Louise Thomas. Elections were held simultaneously on the islands of Providenciales, South Caicos, Grand Turk, Salt Cay and North Caicos, also representing Middle Caicos. Branch representatives for each island were also elected because Ewing said there should be equal representation across the nation. While the interim government has not responded to requests for comment on the formation of the organization, it allowed civil servants time off, closing public offices early, to hold elections. One of the main aims of the revitalized association is to ensure civil servants have a voice in planned upcoming civil service reform measures, Ewing has said. Other goals of the organization include representation, recognition and training of its members. “It is our aim to empower all civil servants so that they can perform their duties with excellence,” Ewing said.
