Letter: A big thanks to police, their supporters PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The present situation in the TCI gives us much to complain about these days, but there are also a number of people who voluntarily are trying to improve our lives.

We often fail to say a simple word of thanks to those charged with keeping us safe, and we many times fail to see that there are community-minded people who continually strive to help make things better for all residents.

To that end, I would like to comment on the results being achieved by police in their Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 programs, plus the efforts of one of our neighborhood watch groups, in concert with a local small business manager and a number of people, who are helping the police in their effort to patrol our streets.

First, let me talk about Alpha 1 and Alpha 2. The police are often the target of criticism for not getting the crime rate down, and we are all aware that violent crime has become much more common than it was in previous years. That being said, the following are some statistics on the rate of crime in Provo:

1. In November 2009 there were 203 crime incidents reported in the TCI. In November 2010 there were 106 crime incidents reported. That is a DECREASE of 48 percent!
2. From July to November 2009 we experienced an average of 12 crime incidents per month. In  November 2010 we experienced nine incidents or a 25 percent decrease.
3. As we are all aware, burglaries; particularly residential burglaries, are substantially down. In November 2009 we experienced nine robberies. In November 2010 there were three robberies, a 67 percent decrease.

What has made the difference? It is the hard work of a number of neighborhood watch groups together with the police. It is also obvious that the police are becoming a force to reckoned with! They have become more visible, have put pressure on the bad guys and initiated programs like Alpha 1 and Alpha 2.

For all the criticism we have made of the police force, it is time we also recognize the results they are achieving and start to deliver accolades and thanks. I think I speak for all residents of the TCI when I say A BIG THANKS TO OUR POLICE FORCE!!

Clearly, the changes by the government to ensure longer sentences, the gun amnesty, etc. have also had an impact on the reduction in crime in Provo, but it is “boots on the ground” that ultimately brings results.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of our neighborhood watch groups, particularly one neighborhood watch group which has stepped up and gone that extra mile to help the police in their efforts to deter crime. For both the Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 efforts this neighborhood watch, along with another willing soul have provided food and drink to the police carrying out the “on the ground” effort. I am speaking of the Welk Lane neighborhood watch group headed by Sandra Shaw and Belinda Martin of PTS Tool Rentals, across from the Glass Shack on Leeward Highway.

Sandra and Belinda have received a great deal of help and support from other neighborhood watch groups, residents and, I believe, some businesses in Provo. I would like to  say A BIG THANKS TO SANDRA, BELINDA AND ALL THE PEOPLE who have been involved in helping our police force in their efforts to make our area safe.

I would encourage everyone to contribute to these volunteer efforts. Please contact Sandra at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . No contribution is too small. Every bit helps!
