One week after a devastating fire destroyed the Ona Glinton Primary School on Grand Turk, students are slowly getting back to school but looking for help.

The Ministry and Department of Education immediately jumped into action Sunday after the fire took out nine of the classrooms and several other buildings, making operations at the school impossible and displacing 312 students and their teachers.

A working committee comprising personnel from the ministries and departments of education, finance and works was established set plans in motion for moving forward with the rebuilding of the school.

In an effort to establish some degree of normalcy in the shortest possible time, the ministry implemented a shift system at the Eliza Simons Primary School that began Nov. 29. “The entire community is being asked to support this new shift system, as together we strive to improve standards in education,” the ministry said in a statement earlier in the week.

The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture also opened an account at Scotiabank in order to accept donations towards the rebuilding efforts.

All persons wishing to make monetary contributions can do so by depositing funds to Scotiabank Account # 35394.

The ministry is also accepting contributions of building materials at the Central Purchasing Unit on Grand Turk, and those wishing to contribute school supplies and equipment  such as books, duplicating paper, ink, CD players, pens, pencil, chalk, computers, photocopiers, printers are asked to deliver these items to the Education Department.  On Grand Turk, the office is located on Mission Folly, and on Providenciales it is located at Butterfield Square.

Residents of South, North and Middle Caicos may take their donations to the respective District Commissioners’ Offices for forwarding to Grand Turk.
Community groups seeking to undertake projects in order to raise funds on behalf of the Ona Glinton Primary School are encouraged to do so. However, the Ministry of Education says it must be notified before the event is announced and/or undertaken.

To date, no details have been released about the origin of the fire.
