80 percent not paying Crown land leases PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Approximately 80 percent of all people who received Crown land under lease purchase agreements made their first year’s rent and never made another payment, according to the Crown Land Unit.

And beginning early next year, a list of all those who are in arrears — owing a total of about $3 million — will be published on the Internet for everyone to see.

“Every time someone decides not to pay the government what is due, other services have to be cut to compensate,” said Jon Llewellyn, the Crown Land advisor to the governor. “The public have a right to know who is taking advantage of their Crown land without paying.”

People in arrears are asked to contact the Crown Land Unit in writing if they have concerns about their names and amount of arrears being published:

  • Crown Land Unit, Government Square, Grand Turk
  • Crown Land Unit, Palmco Building, Leeward Highway, Providenciales

“Unfortunately, many individuals and companies have not paid the rent due under their Conditional Purchase Leases,” Llewellyn said. “Whilst many will blame the current political and economic situation, the simple truth is that these arrears had accrued long before the global economic downturn and the Order in Council coming into force, sometimes with rents going unpaid for years.

“The decision to publish this data has not been taken lightly. Unfortunately, the government has been left with few realistic alternatives.

“From the perspective of the Crown Land Unit, it is frustrating to have Crown land allocated to those who refuse to pay when so many citizens have not yet had a chance to own their own plot. Despite consistent encouragement to pay, the level of Conditional Purchase Lease arrears remains at an unacceptably high level and this has placed a great deal of pressure on other government resources at this difficult time.”
