Students from the fourth and fifth grades at Providenciales Primary School learned first-hand why paying attention in math class can turn you from flop to top in the work place.
The students are currently learning about weights and measures, but to take the lesson out of theory in into practice, teacher Steph Gordon asked the chefs at Beaches to give her a little help. Chef Darren invited the students into his kitchen to see how he and other chefs use math everyday cooking up perfection in the kitchen. “If you don’t measure the ingredients correctly, your dishes will not turn out right, and the guests won’t be happy,” he explained to the students. To help demonstrate this, Chef Darren put the kids into small groups cooking up pancakes specifically using incorrect measurements of certain ingredients to let kids see the outcome. “What do you think happens if we use too much salt, baking powder or too much milk,” he asked the kids. The answer was written on their faces as the students had the chance to taste the difference math can make. “The pancakes with too much salt were terrible,” said one of the fourth grade students. “Taking math from the classroom to the kitchen was a great way to help the children to understand the importance of math and the practical application,” Gordon said. Everyone from the students to the chefs at Beaches learned something from the experience. “It was fun for us to have the children visit the kitchen, and we are happy we could help them understand how lessons at school are important in everyday life,” said P.R. Manager Eleanor Finfin said. Chef Darren also gave the children some tips on healthy eating, but most importantly, he taught them that math is more than just numbers — it can also be delicious.
