Two years after the Turks and Caicos Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals opened its spay/neuter clinic, 1,000 animals in the country have received low-cost spay/neuter operations.

“It took a lot of hard work,” said Executive Director Susan Blehr. “We have a wonderful vet, Dr. Rich (Sefcik), and all my team of wonderful volunteers.”

“We’re carrying on with our surgeries, and we hope we are making a difference to the pet population in the Turks and Caicos.”

Present at the small celebration Oct. 16 at the TCSPCA office on Providenciales was Lewis Astwood and his potcake Maxine, who received the 1,000th spay/neuter operation performed at the clinic since it opened in August 2008.

Blehr thanked volunteer veterinarian Dr. Richard Sefcik for the many hours he has donated to the spay/neuter program.

Also present were clinic patrons Simon and Annie Notley, without whose support much of the SPCA’s work would not have been possible, Blehr said.

“The role of volunteers in society and the (non-governmental organizations) like this one do a tremendous job,” said government CEO Mark Capes, who also attended. “I hope the people of Provo and the TCI will come together and support the society and the wonderful work they do.”
