PDM officials ask hoteliers to recruit countrywide PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Turks and Caicos Islands hoteliers can help lift the country out of joblessness and ensure that tourism continues to be a mainstay of the economy, Peoples Democratic Movement shadow ministers say.

“Today (Oct. 6) Shadow Minister of Labour Mr. Ashwood Forbes and Shadow Minister of Tourism Mr. Sean Astwood are calling on the Hotel and Tourism Association to encourage its membership to conduct recruitment drives throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands but in particular in the islands of Grand Turk and South Caicos,” the party said in a prepared statement.

“We are calling on the entire tourism industry, which has weathered the economic storm, to be mindful of the plight of Turks and Caicos Islanders and do all that they can do to employ and recruit from within the TCI.”

Beaches Resorts Villages and Spa has just announced that it will hold a four-day, Belongers-only job fair to recruit enthusiastic locals for many vacant positions throughout the resort.

The PDM said that the country’s economy is facing the most challenging economic times in its history with the worldwide recession affecting new investment in home construction and stalling tourism projects. But improving tourism numbers should create jobs “for hard working Turks and Caicos Islanders who want to become gainfully employed in the tourism sector.”

“Tourism has sustained our people for four decades, and we intend to keep the tourism industry front and centre as the main driver of our economy,” Astwood said. “It is important that all persons play their role in making sure that it survives the next four generations.

“The tourism season will soon begin, and we have made sacrifices as a people over the years to ensure that tourism growth stays on track with such efforts as the development and expansion of the Providenciales airport. Now is the time to prepare for the upcoming season.”

Forbes said the loss of jobs and increase in the cost of living — including the increase in fuel tax — “is a lack of direction by the government for the labour market in TCI. The tourism industry needs to be looked at positively as a place of employment for Belongers, and I encourage all tourism providers to take our people seriously when they apply for employment.”

“The PDM views the tourism industry as a beacon of hope to curb unemployment during these challenging times,” the party’s statement said. “We further warn that the marginalization of our local labour force is not right, and it does not augur well for peaceful co-existence.”
