Race for the Conch a swimming success
Thursday, 15 July 2010 08:14

It was a perfect sunny, calm water day Saturday, July 10, for the first annual “Race for the Conch” ecoswim, helping to make the event a swimming success.

Residents and international visitors alike were impressed by the organization of the open water swim event, the first of its kind in the TCI.

“Even the pros remarked how smoothly everything went and were blown away by the beautiful waters and perfect conditions,” commented event organizer Chloe Zimmerman.

Not only was the event a success promoting the TCI, but Zimmerman says it was also a success for the community.

“We were very excited about the community coming together to make this event happen,” she said. “This island has so much talent and goodwill.”

Seventy-seven swimmers finished the race ranging in times from 22 minutes to 1 hour and 4 minutes.

One of the highlights of the race was seeing 13 year old Isla McLeod come in as the top woman’s swimmer and 5th overall.

Taking home the prized conch trophy was Marcos Diaz from the Dominican Republic, an international open water racing star and Olympic favorite. Marcos said he loved swimming through the clear water and seeing all the sea life, just what the organizers were hoping to achieve.

“We really wanted this race to be inclusive and show off Grace Bay as a real treasure for swimmers,” Zimmerman said. “And I think we succeeded because swimmers and spectators alike really enjoyed themselves.”

“We were also excited about the children’s 100-meter race,” Zimmerman said. “To see those kids swim their hearts out was so gratifying. This was one of our goals — stimulate local interest in swimming. Everyone really created a magic moment on Saturday.”

Thanks to a wonderful day and a spectacular event, a second “Race for the Conch” is already in the works. Organizers were so pleased with the results of this years ecoswim, they have already selected the date for next year.

So mark your calendars for Saturday, July 9, 2011, and join in the fun of the second annual “Race for the Conch.” Next year’s event will offer two distances, a 1-mile and a 2.4-mile swim.

“We are ready to make the Turks and Caicos a destination for open water swimming,” Zimmerman said.
