His Excellency the Gov. Gordon Wetherell has announced that the Ministry of Health and Human Services is considering a ban on smoking in all public places. “This is an important health initiative because it would address the exposure of many non-smoking persons to second-hand smoke,” the governor said. He did not elaborate on the details of the proposal or when it might take effect. The governor made the announcement on June 26, which has been observed since 1987 as part of the United Nations’ drug control program as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year’s theme was “Health: Think health, not drugs.” In addition to considering a public smoking ban, the ministry will be merging its drug unit, psychiatric unit and psychological unit. This is expected to provide a more synergistic treatment of substance abusers who also often suffer psychiatric and psychological problems, he said. “I commend the efforts of the Ministry of Health and Human Services and the National Drug Unit for continuing to lead the way in the fight against the very persistent scourge of drugs in the TCI,” the governor said. “I also commend them for doing so despite the limited resources with which they have to operate. “I commend and thank those corporate sponsors who have contributed to and partnered with the delivery of the programs and services offered by the drug unit over the years. Your assistance has been and continues to be invaluable.” The governor urged the community to take the drug problem seriously because increases in drug abuse go hand in hand with increased crime.
