The countdown has begun for the first ever “Race for the Conch.”

With only a few short weeks to go, organizers and participants are getting excited about the upcoming event.

A first for the TCI, this newly formed open water tournament will be a one-mile swimming race along the shores of Grace Bay that takes place July 10. The swim is scheduled to begin and end at the beach access between Club Med and Ocean Club at the Flamingo Cafe. The course will be a loop roughly parallel to the beach measuring one mile. The course will be marked by buoys that are standard for open water swims.

Open water swimming is an activity in which people swim in outdoor bodies of water such as oceans, bays, lakes and rivers. The first recorded notable example of open water swimming took place May 3, 1810, when Lord Byron swam from Europe to Asia across the Hellespont Straight. In the first edition of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, the swimming competition was held in open water. Today there are more than 1,400 competitive open water swims around the world ranging from 200 meters to 88 kilometers.

The event will also feature a “Race for the Conch” 100-yard Children’s SeaSwim. The children’s race will start at 10 a.m. (an hour before the one-mile swim), just up the beach from the Flamingo Cafe. There is no charge for participating in the race, but the number of children racers will be limited to 50, so be sure to register early. The age limit for children is under 14.

Above and beyond being a great fun day at the beach, “The swim will call attention to needs of those less fortunate in the Turks and Caicos as well as our neighbors in Haiti,” says organizer Chloe Zimmerman. The Swim Committee aims to raise funds for local charities that improve children’s nutrition and mitigate the impact of natural disasters. These charities are listed on the swim race’s Web site at www.ecoseaswim.com.

Registration is open for all swimmers interested in taking part in this inspiring event. All finishers will receive a medal and a T-shirt commemorating the event. Unique “Race for the Conch” trophies, created by local artist Stanford Handfield, will go to the top three male and top three female racers. The youngest and oldest swimmers will also get awards.

All swim participants will be eligible for a prizes to be drawn at awards ceremony at Flamingo Cafe from 6:30-7:30 p.m. following the race. Visit the Web site for more information on how to participate in this exciting event.

You can register for the race with Donna Musgrove at 241-6443 or Marco Travel 946-4393.
