The Turks and Caicos Islands Sport Commission and EMS have closed parts of the national stadium in order to give regenerating grass time to grow.

“We have decided to close parts of the field to the public, right now that is the inside of the track,” said Director of the Sport Commission Alvin Parker.

Parker says due to a lack of funds, the water to the stadium was turned off several months ago which caused significant damage to the grass. “The grass appeared to be dead several months ago,” he said, but thanks to the water being turned back on and recent rains, the grass is now on the mend.

Officials recommended that part of the stadium be closed to the public in order to allow the grass time to grow back. The inside of the field will now be closed for a two-month period from June 5 until July 31.

Other parts of facilities will be open to the public, Parker said. He also acknowledged the stadium is in need of many other repairs, but with finances tight it does not appear funds will be available soon for that cause. He said several local sponsor donations have been helpful to do some things to the stadium, but much more is needed if it will ever be returned to its original proud state.

Parker has hopes to get the facility back up to a state that it could host major sporting events in the future.  The national stadium was built in 2007 to host 36th Annual CARIFTA games at an estimated cost of $7 million, with the hopes of attracting more sporting events to the country.
