![]() Local lawyer Clayton Greene is putting his private life behind him, entering the public spotlight as a candidate for leadership of the Progressive National Party. Greene quietly announced his candidacy several weeks ago, but stepped into the limelight this week explaining the reason for his decision. Born in Lorimers on Middle Caicos, Greene says fate and circumstance have brought him to this place. “I am running because I believe that our present circumstance does not define who we are, nor does it limit where we as a people we can go. Our best days are yet before us,” he explained. Greene says he is the builder of bridges and the mender of fences, and he brings with him the qualities that will be required of the next leader. “These are undoubtedly honesty and integrity, but also diplomacy, loyalty, vision, compassion and courage,” he said. Up until the suspension of the constitution last year, Clayton served as speaker of the House of Assembly. He says he wants to ensure that stable, responsible and transparent parliamentary government is returned to the people and to restore the good name of the country. “I am running because we need to find TCI solutions to TCI’s problems, and collectively we can,” he said. The PNP has suffered a significant blow to its reputation in the past year, but Greene says, “We cannot allow the cloud of suspicion the hovers over the PNP to cause us not to answer the call.” Greene says the party needs to inspire a new generation of voters, those who seek a real and meaningful connection with the political process. “I am ideally positioned to initiate that dialogue with the rank and file of our party and with the wider Turks and Caicos,” he said. Driven by the possibility that “together we might be able to realize the hope of a brighter today for you and I,” Greene says he wants to be among those who ensure that the promise of a brighter, more prosperous and more secure future for future generations is kept. As to how he will measure his success, Greene said, “I will be satisfied when our economy is put right and is being managed in a sustainable way. I will be satisfied when every Turks and Caicos Islander can feel that in this land, if they are prepared to work, there is no opportunity that is outside of their grasp.” Greene is currently up against other party candidates, fellow lawyer Carlos Simons and Digicel TCI CEO E. Jay Saunders. The decision will be made as to who will lead the party at its national convention scheduled for August 6 and 7. Click HERE to Greene’s complete statement.
